Biography
Fabien Novarino was born in 1963 in Chambéry. He spent his childhood in the foothills of the Alps, where his taste for nature and large open spaces developed. From a very early age, his leisure time became occupied by drawing, painting and model making. At the age of seven, his family settled in the south, of which the dazzling light, the climate that was new to him and the wild landscapes influenced his young sensitivity. Already, he knew that “he wanted to be a painter when he grew up”. However, he did not immediately take up the trade of painter. Literary studies lead him to Paris, where he frequently visited museums and attended expositions at the Grand Palace (Grand Palais) where he would exhibit his work ten years later. Fabien Novarino followed a commercial career until the age of 27, when he decided to launch upon an artistic adventure.
His first oil paintings in 1990 were exhibited in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne, at the Grand Palace, in Paris. The first galleries that became interested in his painting immediately charmed a public of collectors who recognized in him a heir of the great names of the School of Provence. His large size paintings show landscapes of the back country of Provence, small fishing ports, vertiginous coves or market scenes, knife painted with vividness, choosing the brightest colours from his pallet, organized in strongly opposite contrasts. Without in any way renouncing his style, but always seeking original settings or more relaxed traits, his inspiration has extended today to different topics to which he brings a new and personal vision each time, such as the city : Paris or New York or of more wild horizons such as Morocco. His paintings are exhibited in the most prestigious galleries of France, but also abroad, where for almost twenty years a large public of art lovers and collectors, unceasingly growing, has acquired his works.
Since 2010, Fabien has integrated photography into his works, evolving his pictorial work towards a more contemporary language. From personal or professional clichés acquired in offices, Fabien designs original graphic works that come from the Neo Pop style – a worthy successor to the Pop Art movement born in the 1950s. Produced from a subtle mixture of collages, drawings and stencils, his canvases are inspired by icons of American and French cinema, modern urbanism and the world of comics. Firmly contemporary, his art is a true homage to the society of entertainment.
Fabien Novarino is currently presenting a completely new work, the fruit of several years of artistic research, in cut metal and acrylic glass, mounted on several levels linked by struts. Veritable 3D wall sculptures, these original creations pick up the themes dear to his heart: Vanity with her butterflies seen from a quirky, pop viewpoint, the vintage magazines, from which he reconstructs from improbable headlines on absolute icons the comics of the 1950's, interpreted in a very contemporary street art style. These works, examples of astonishing plastic art and with a magnetic power of seduction intrigue, arouse the curiosity of and are coveted by enthusiasts and great collectors all over the world.
